When Leo asked me if I was going away for the summer, I nodded immediately – and untruthfully. ‘Where?’ He lifted his eyes to mine the way motorists switch their headlights up to full beam. I pictured myself sunbathing in the communal garden of the flats I lived in with my mum and washing up at the pub in the evenings. ‘Not sure yet ... France or Spain, probably.’ ‘That’s a shame.’ He took another sip of his coffee.

About the book

Kate and her friends are spending the summer at Darkmere Castle in Cornwall – which she thinks will be a perfect opportunity for her to get together with Leo.

But instead, she's drawn into the dark story of an eighteenth-century girl who haunts the tunnels and towers of the house ... and whose curse now hangs over them all.

Press reviews

“I LOVED this book from start to finish! It pulled me in and wrapped me around its pages and did not let me go until the very end … Darkmere has the perfect mix of tension, mystery and humour all mixed with brilliant story telling, writing and fantastic characters.”

Tales of Yesterday

“The creepy thriller atmosphere combined with thorny romance/friendship issues put me in mind of James Dawson’s writing — which is a very good thing! … The mysteries build until the two narratives come together satisfyingly. This is such a well written book.”

Kendra Leighton, author of GLIMPSE

DARKMERE is a dark, twisted story that had me gripped from the very beginning … [Helen Maslin] really knows how to write characters that will draw you in and make you want to keep on reading till the very end.”

Words from a Reader

“A spooky fast-paced read, skilfully written ... This is a book that you will really want to devour in one go.”

Kate Ormand, author of DARK DAYS

“It was utterly addictive and just so good. Totally unputdownable … I just loved this book so much, it contained all of my favourite elements that I love in a book which has resulted in Helen becoming one of my new favourite authors ever … if you’re looking for a brain-busting and mindblowing read – GO READ DARKMERE.”

Author notes

'Darkmere is about a girl who falls not just for a boy but for his friends as well. Leo's gang are confident, wealthy and spoilt – everything Kate's not. More than anything, she wants to belong. Trouble is, the people who seem to be the coolest on the outside are often the ones with the most problems on the inside ...'
