Thirty seconds left, one all, I’ve got the ball.

I’m sprinting, presumably as fast as a person can. The other team’s got nothing on me. I’m in control. All I’ve got to do is bob and weave. Moving my hand now is risky, but necessary to take this shot. Judging by the crowd’s roar, the legs could be taken from under me any second . . .

Don’t overthink, just kick.

The words ‘Your controller batteries are low’ flash on to the screen.

I pause the game and exit on to the Xbox dashboard. Taking the controller off my chest is easier said than done.

Relax.

The controller’s not going anywhere.

Take your time.

And . . . breathe.

About the book

If you’re always thinking that the next thing will make you happy … what happens to right now?

Seventeen-year-old Sam, who has cerebral palsy, wants some control over his life.

When he is excluded from yet another school trip and has to spend the day with his bully, it’s the tipping point.

In his campaign for change, Sam gets more than he bargained for. But if you’re always thinking that the next thing will make you happy, what happens to right now?
