I see the tornado a split second before she does.
‘Mum.’
‘Got it,’ she says.
I feel a familiar twinge of fear, though at this distance the tornado is only a dot, past the uneven blackness of the Fault. Mum clambers past me to the back seats, the car’s Kevium engine still humming low.
‘You’re looking for your suit, aren’t you?’
‘Now I know there’s definitely a tornado.’
I groan. It’s an unnecessary risk to put it on. ‘And what if a patrol sees you?’
‘Well, keep a look out.’ She grins. That’s Mum – action first, think later. ‘I can hear you rolling your eyes, by the way.’
