Gaëlle Poterne sat up in her rag-pile bed and listened.
There it was again.
The crackle of gunfire. She looked out through the grimy window on to the
city below and gasped.
There were King Louis XVI’s soldiers, in blue-andwhiteuniforms, brandishing muskets with bayonets. They rode on horseback towards angry, screaming mobs – the people’s army. Everyone was looking to fight.
‘Wake up! Wake up!’ Gaëlle prodded her still-sleeping sisters, her heart pounding.
