I’ve never attended an execution before. Astrapē and I once killed a man, but that was different. That was to defend myself, and to help Feldspar. Watching the cold-blooded termination of a life feels worse.
The Apex and I have gathered on a viewing platform that overlooks a point about halfway down the Spire, where Alathea is chained ready for the oncoming storm. I’m at one end; Doralie, the Elder Queen, sits beside me in a wheeled chair, her shield leaning protectively over her. The rest of the family stand beyond them, but I can’t focus on any details. I’m too conscious of my mother’s gaze burning into the side of my face.
