The #TimesChickenHouse shortlist is here!

Posted by Kesia on Friday May 5th, 2017

Our discerning Publisher, Barry Cunningham, has had the tricky job of picking out the top five longlisted submissions for the Times/Chicken House Children's Fiction Competition shortlist. We don’t envy him: picking a longlist was difficult enough – the standard was truly spectacular! – but we’re pleased to say that he’s arrived at a decision. Drumroll please – our shortlist is …

Skylark by Danny Rurlander
Song of the Mountain by Jasbinder Bilan
Violet Bloomfield and the Despicable Dinner Lady by Ruth Griffiths
Minnie and Bogle by Katherine Bassford
Warrior Boy by Virginia Clay

Hurray! We’re fantastically proud of this exciting and diverse shortlist, which is full of adventurous exploits, daring protagonists and marvellous discoveries. The shortlist consists of a thriller about a boy with a traumatic past who foils a terrorist plot (Skylark), a mystical Indian adventure in which a girl must travel across the mountains to discover her father's fate (Song of the Mountain), a hilarious comedy in which the arch-villain is a wickedly warty dinner lady (Violet Bloomfield and the Despicable Dinner Lady), a fantasy adventure about an outcast boy and his pet moth (Minnie and Bogle) and a coming-of-age adventure about a mixed-race boy from London who discovers his estranged Maasai family in Kenya (Warrior Boy).

Congratulations to all the shortlisted authors, whose manuscripts will now be sent out to our panel of prestigious judges for their reading pleasure (more on them soon). We couldn’t be more excited to find out which story will win a publishing contract … Watch this space!
